Electrical CE Requirements by State

Electrical continuing education requirements by state. The summaries below are compiled from official state licensing board sources and were verified in May 2026. Requirements change — always confirm current rules with your state board (linked in each section) before relying on them. Grounded Learning CE courses are pending approval in these states; CE hours shown are the state’s requirements, not a guarantee of our course approval.


Alabama

  • 14 hours every 2 years — Contractors only (journeymen not required).
  • Minimum 7 hours NEC / NFPA 70.
  • Up to 6 hours may carry over.
  • Renewal deadlines quarterly (Mar/Jun/Sep/Dec 30) on a 2-year cycle. Online accepted.
  • Note: AECB Admin Rules 303-X-1 through 303-X-6 effective Feb 14, 2026.

Arkansas

  • 8 hours per NEC code cycle (3 years). All NEC content.

Colorado

  • 24 hours every 3 years.
  • Min 4 hours NEC code changes; max 4 hours safety.
  • Provider attestation system. 7-year retention. Next renewal Sept 30, 2026.

Connecticut

  • 4 hours per year. CE deadline June 30; license renewal Sept 30.
  • First renewal exempt. 4-year retention.

Delaware

  • Master: 10 hours / 2 years (5 NEC starting 2nd renewal).
  • Journeyperson: 5 hours / 2 years (tiered). Renewal June 30 even years.

Florida

  • 11 hours every 2 years (1 safety + 1 business + 1 workers’ comp + 1 laws/rules + 1 false alarm + 6 general).
  • Alarm contractors +2 hours. Renewal Aug 31 even years. 2023 NEC.

Georgia

  • 8 hours / 2 years (4/year), renewal June 30 even years.
  • CE Broker reporting mandatory since Jan 1, 2026. 5-year retention.

Kentucky

  • 6 hours for EE/ME; +6 hours for Contractors.
  • Topics: safety, codes, trade-related. Online accepted. Biennial per HB 444.

Louisiana

  • 6 hours per year — Contractors. No specific category required.
  • 5-year retention. Dec 31 deadline annually.

Maine

  • 15 hours / 3 years (Master), current NEC. Renewal $150; late fee $50 within 90 days.

Michigan

  • 15 hours per NEC adoption cycle (event-driven).
  • 2023 NEC adopted Mar 12, 2024; 2026 NEC expected 2027.
  • CE Broker reporting within 14 days. Licenses expire Dec 31 annually + 60-day grace.

Minnesota

  • Master/Journeyman: 16 hours / 2 years (12 NEC + 4 PD).
  • Power-limited: 4 NEC + 12 non-code. 2026 NEC review committee active.

Mississippi

  • 2 hours per year — Residential.
  • Applies to residential licenses issued on/after July 1, 2015. Annual renewal. Board-approved provider required.

Montana

  • 16 hours / 2 years (ARM 24.141.2102). Min 50% NEC. License types EM/EJ/ER.

North Carolina

  • Unlimited/Intermediate/Limited/SP-SFD: 8 hours/year. Special restricted: 4 hours/year.
  • 50% in-person. Up to 24 hours may carry forward.

North Dakota

  • 8 hours per year. Min 50% NEC. Online must include ND Laws/Rules section + quiz.
  • Renewal: Apprentice Jan 31; Journeyman Mar 31; Class B + Master Apr 30.
  • 2026 NEC required (effective May 1, 2026). No credit for same course twice per cycle.

Nebraska

  • 12 hours / 2 years. Min 6 hours NEC. Deadline Jan 1 of odd-numbered years.

Oklahoma

  • 12 hours / 3 years (doubled from 6, effective Jan 1, 2026).
  • 6 hours codes + 6 hours other (HB 3215). Apprentices 3 hours/year.

Oregon

  • General Supervising/Journeyman: 24 hours / 3 years.
  • 4 hours code change + 4 hours OR Rule/Law + 16 hours code-related.

Pennsylvania

  • Master/Journeyman: no state-level CE requirement.
  • UCC Inspector: 15 hours / 3 years per category (max 45). L&I-approved provider required.

South Dakota

  • 16 hours / 2 years, min 8 hours NEC. Online cap: only 8 of 16 may be online.

Texas

  • 4 hours per year. Topics: NEC + Tx Occ Code Ch 1305 + 16 TAC Ch 73 + NFPA 70E.
  • 2026 NEC: TDLR-approved courses being offered — confirm adoption date with TDLR.

Utah

  • 16 hours / 2 years. 12 Core (8 NEC + 4 NFPA 70E) + 4 professional. Renewal Nov 30 even years.

Virginia

  • 3 hours / 3 years. DPOR-approved providers. Each trade requires separate 3 hours if multi-trade.

Vermont

  • Master/JW: 15 hours / 3 years; Type-S JW: 8 hours / 3 years. All NEC.
  • Vermont Energy Goals module (~20 min) mandatory.

Washington

  • 24 hours / 3 years (8 NEC + 4 RCW/WAC + 12 other). Provider reporting within 7 days. No repeat classes.

Wisconsin

  • Master/Journeyman: 24 hours / 4 years. Industrial/Residential: 18 hours / 4 years.
  • Min 4 hours NEC. CE due Mar 30; renewal June 30 every 4 years.
